Athletic and handsome, Mike was always meant to be a superstar football player. Ever since an early age, he has been groomed by his father for nothing else. He has a rare talent and a natural ability on the pitch. When Mike says he is a great footballer - this is not arrogance - he is simply stating facts. Mike has been raised in an intense and competitive environment. Despite his confidence on the pitch, Mike suffers from a lack of confidence in other situations; however, this is hidden by his charm and a winning smile. Exuding a friendly warmth that puts everyone at ease, Mike is a focused young man who loves football with a passion. The only thing he wants more that becoming a professional player is to make his father proud.
Originating from Chester, Mike arrives in Harchester in 1980. Mike's debut for the youth team against Oxford in the Midlands Youth Cup is successful and is polished off with a goal. After arranging driving lessons with Susan (Terry's girlfriend) Mike falls for her. This leads to a secret romance. At Christmas Mike and the lads make a £10 bet – whoever wins will play at the next World Cup. Terry then goes on to propose to Susan – only to be turned down. The secret affair then becomes obvious to Terry which leaves Mike sporting a cracking black eye and a few other bruises to boot! Maynard's day does pick up though, Jonny has picked up an injury. Harry informs Mike that Jonny has pulled a hamstring and he's starting for the first team! Boxing Day sees the full debut against Tottenham Hotspur. Alongside Tommy Shaw upfront, Mike should have been given a penalty in the first half. However things get better and Harchester's number 11 slides one in from a tight angle. Suddenly everything turns around and Steve Perryman the Tottenham number 6 hits Mike with a hard tackle from behind, Maynard never makes it back up and is stretched off the pitch with a knock on the right knee".
In March 1981 after attempts to get over his injury, Mike face's the truth that his career is over. Closure is made by visiting the lads at a youth team training session, where the lads tell him they're sorry - bar Terry. Mike makes the effort to apologise to Terry and finally he excepts his handshake. 6 months later Mike bumps into Jonny and Terry again, but this time at his Dad's car show room. He is now working as a car salesman and sells Terry a car. When Mike drops off the car for Terry at the club, he bumps back into Susan. He tries to explain why he has not been in touch with her for ages and blames the loss of his career as his excuse. Mike asks Susan out again, she excepts. During another average day at work Maynard bumps into Jonny Fletcher again. "Fletch" is after a new car and is looking at a car the same as Terry's. Mike is shocked to find out that he cant afford anything more flashy and is astonished to find out Jonny only gets £40,000 a year. Mike tells him he could help with his situation and asks Jonny if he trusts him, which he says he does. So with the concent of the player Mike approaches Harry Sidwell as Jonny's agent and demands £60,000 a year and goal bonus for his client. Harry is astonished, but due to what Jonny gives to the team accepts the new terms. Mike has changed career again and has made it as an agent.
After a night out in "Studs" to celebrate his first deal, Mike proposes to Susan, she says "yes". They marry and Mike gains more clients such as Kevin Nelson. Mike starts to become greedy, becomes involved with the "wrong types", starts taking drugs and neglecting his wife. Due to Kevin's situation, Mike starts to take avantage and begins talks with Barcelona. His aim is to get Kevin a move and get him in the England team for the 1986 World Cup in Mexico. New manager Kenny Bruce isn't helping matters either, he is playing Kevin in the "hole" when Mike feels he should be playing on the left wing to improve his England chances. Mike gets chatting to the press and discovers some dirt on Bruce. He finds out he's been cautioned twice for kerb crawling and his wife is unaware. He decides to use this to his advantage and turns to blackmail. He threatens Bruce that he'll tell his wife unless he plays Kevin wide left. Bruce has to go along with it, but Kevin isnt happy. Terry clicks on and confronts Mike, Mike also tells Kevin to do the right thing. Kevin goes off and does, he plays for the team, not himself. Mike goes mad when he realises that Kevin isn't doing what he wants and bumps into wife Susan dropping his drugs infront of her. She looks at him and tells him she wants a divorce. He is furious now and bursts into the Harchester dressing room at half time of the championship deciding game and demands to Bruce that Kevin plays out on the left. Mike gets told to leave and Kevin follows and sacks him as his agent. Terry spots Mike in the empty Addison Road after Harchester have clinched the title. Mike is gutted. Not because of his forthcoming divorce or even his sacking by Kevin, he has finally admitted to himself that he misses his football. He tells Terry that he was using making money as an agent as a substitute for not playing and it wasn't working.
