Alan Rothman was one of a few successful exports to Europe, during his playing career at Roma he had three trophy-laden years in Seria A before returning to England with a fantastic knowledge of the continental game. He began his managerial career in the lowly English leagues at Gillingham, still dreaming of moving back to Italy. Finally after a few seasons in England Alan was offered the chance to resurrect his Italian football connections when he took up the reins at Bologna. Rothman is an arrogant man and he sees himself as the most important man at any club, this becomes very evident when he moves to Harchester for a brief stay in 2001/2002. A control-freak, he is also a bit of a ladies man outside of the game however when it comes to Football management he is ruthless and will let no-one stand in his way for progression. Alan Rothman is very smooth with the media; he can manipulate them, which has been key to his success. The lads respect Alan - and they are weary of approaching him, as he's careful to foster the image of being untouchable.
With the Dragons in the Champions League for the very first time and under new owner Sam Irving, HUFC is the place to be - for Alan Rothman at least as he agreed to take charge of Harchester along with his assistant David Spears, although his stay would be brief due to his fanciful private life. When the team were preparing to board the bus for the Champions League qualifier against Mallorca, Fletch was arrested as part of the Prashant Dattani murder case. As a good manager Alan stayed in England to see his star player through a difficult period in his life, although Rothman had a different motive by staying whilst his assistant is in Spain, Alan has an affair with Dawn Spears - David's wife. Although when David finds out he sees an opportunity to bring his mentor down to size. Furious at Lynda being made the Chief Executive of Harchester United, Rothman decides to become manager of AC Milan when he is offered the position and then immediately goes about bringing both David Spears and new club captain Stevie Shaw to the San Siro - only Spears has no intention of leaving and plans on making revenge very, very sweet! Alan Rothman sets up a deal to take Shaw to Milan behind Ms Block's back, although he plans to make a little dosh from the deal also - this is where David plans to expose Alan as scum, along with the help of Paul Hankin. They set him up with a fake representative from Milan, who Alan discusses the transfer with, and his backhander! The media have a field day when Alan is exposed, the Milan offer falls through, and he is sacked from his job at Harchester. He had also ended his affair with Dawn in the process.
Having left the club in shame only the year before, Alan Rothman returns towards the end of the 2002/2003 season as caretaker manager under Phil Wallis when Patrick Doyle is exposed as a cheat and sacked. Alan brings with him his PA Jennifer Taylor, a girl totally besotted with the smarmy arrogant manager. However Alan doesn't have eyes for her and is currently dating Sky Sports presenter Yvonne and when she agrees to become his wife he pushes her into the arms of Sabatier. Rothman made amends for his failings during his previous stint at Harchester by taking the club to the last day of the season to see whether they survive to fight another day or Doyle wins his bet. And when Jamie Parker takes the team captive - a man dropped by Rothman for his erratic performances - Rothman inevitably feels guilty, as he is somewhat responsible for it. When Abi Fletcher is shot, Rothman suffers a heart attack and is revived on the dressing room floor but his second stint as a manager is over; having helped save the club from relegation he leaves Harchester with his head held high.
