The bubbly, pretty Rachel Gately is the new club receptionist at Harchester. She was previously employed by First Division club Q.P.R. in the same capacity. However, while there she was also the mistress of the now Harchester captain Matt Conlon and there appears to be little coincidence in her appearing at the club. Thinking with her heart rather than her head, she believes she is in love with family man Matt. While the new club secretary makes a big impression on many of the team, her arrival at Harchester is not welcomed by Matt, who had partly left London for a new start. But he is clearly still in love with the girl and tells her that she has to go before Lizzie finds out. Lizzie does find out which causes major problems for the married couple. When she agrees to accompany Matt down the catwalk for the charity event 'Harchester Uncovered' and chickens out at the last minute, Rachel is on stand-by and walks down the cat-walk with Matt. Lizzie is so angry with jealousy that she walks onto the stage and hits her husband in front of everyone.
The press are hound Matt and Lizzie over the public fight at the charity event. Lizzie takes Rachel out for the day to pick the kids up from school and to do the shopping, in the hope that Rachel will realise that she is breaking up a family by staying in Harchester. Finally Rachel breaks down in tears and tells Lizzie that she will leave them alone. Matt also grows increasingly unimpressed with Rachel flirting with his team- mates, particularly young Danny Rawsthorne. He is very annoyed when the two begin to date.
When the Junior Dragons Christmas party rolls around Lizzie who is helping organise the party asks Matt to come in as Santa and Rachel asks Danny. The party goes ahead with two Santa's but Matt gets angry when he sees how well Rachel and Danny are getting along. Rachel ends up spending the night with Danny and Matt is not happy about this and ends up in a fight with him. Lizzie sees that Matt must still be in love with Rachel. She later gets drunk when Matt goes missing. Seeing that the family are torn apart, Rachel realises what she has done and tells Lizzie that she is going to leave Harchester. She leaves with the Conlon family in tatters, Danny with a broken heart and Harchester without a club receptionist.
