Following her husband Matt’s transfer to Harchester in the summer of 2000, Lizzie Conlon and her children Emma and Jake moved to the midlands from London. Lizzie, a working-class Glaswegian catholic, is the driving force behind the family. After moving to Harchester it is Lizzie’s task to stabilise the family after uprooting them from the South. It becomes apparent quite quickly that Lizzie has a real jealous streak- when she sees her husband with blonde bomb- shell Tash Parker she gets very upset and lashes out at him. Her children too find the move difficult. Jake suffers some taunts from a bully over his father’s poor displays while their daughter Emma when she goes missing looking for Tash. This intensifies Lizzie’s resentment towards Tash.

When Matt's ex-lover Rachel turns up as Receptionist at the club, Matt is clearly still in love with the girl but he tells her that she has to go before Lizzie finds out. But Lizzie does find out which causes major problems for the married couple. Lizzie agrees to accompany Matt down the catwalk in a charity event 'Harchester Uncovered' but when Lizzie opts out at the last minute, Rachel is on stand-by and walks down the cat-walk with Matt. Lizzie is so angry that she walks onto the stage and hits Matt in front of everyone. The press are hounding Matt and Lizzie over the public fight at the charity event. Lizzie takes Rachel out for the day to pick the kids up from school and to do the shopping, in the hope that Rachel would realise that she is breaking up a family by staying in Harchester. Finally Rachel breaks down in tears and tells Lizzie that she will leave them alone.

Lizzie who is helping organise the party asks Matt to come in as Santa and Rachel asks Danny. The party goes ahead with two Santa's but Matt gets angry when he sees how well Rachel and Danny are getting along. Rachel ends up spending the night with Danny, Matt is not happy about this and ends up in a fight with Danny. Lizzie knows that Matt must still be in love with Rachel. She falls in the arms of Scott Lucas for comfort and they steal a kiss. Later Lizzie gets drunk when Matt goes missing, the family are torn apart, Rachel realises what she has done and tells Lizzie that she is going to leave Harchester. Despite this Lizzie tells Matt she wants a divorce but as the kids get excited about Christmas, she delays her plans and tells Matt they need to take things one day at a time.

Lizzie, like Matt as captain, becomes the leader of ‘Team Wives', the group of players' wives and girlfriends. She is very often the woman to speak on their behalf. For example, when it is discovered that the Barrons may be unsafe to live in, Lizzie and Tash back Lynda into a corner and demand that she pays for them and their families to live in a hotel until the Barrons are deemed safe. She is also very supportive as a friend- especially to Scott Lucas, who talked to Lizzie about going to look for his dad. In the summer of 2001 Lizzie left Harchester when her husband Matt was transferred to Bolton Wanderers.
