Trained by Harchester since joining the club as an apprentice, Danny finds himself promoted to the first team squad at the tender age of 18. Likened by Andy Ansah as being like a young Joe Cole of Paul Scholes, Ray decides to try him out. However, Danny is not in the typical mould of the young Premiership player. He refuses to drink and gamble, much to the annoyance of his new team mates. When Campbell tells him it is something he has to do to fit in, Danny tells him that his father had a serious gambling problem and he doesn't want to go down the same path. Danny starts dating new club receptionist Rachel Gately, but the relationship appears doomed with her ex Matt Conlon making life difficult for them. At Christmas, when Rachel ends up spending the night with Danny, Matt is not happy about this and ends up in a fight with Danny. Rachel soon leaves, leaving Danny with a broken heart. To make matters worse for Danny a girl Campbell picks up named Maria starts a party in the house they share with Eddie. Maria and a friend spike Danny's drink to liven him up, but Eddie comes home just in time to help Danny and calls him an ambulance. Maria re- appears a few months later and worms her way into Eddie' life, him being unaware of what she is really like, much to Danny's disappointment. She puts Danny in a difficult situation, but she gets dound out and leaves Eddie heart- broken.
On the pitch, Danny has shown some good form in his debut season, becoming a key player already. He capped an impressive seasons with an incredible strike against West Ham in the final game of the season to secure a third place finish and entry into the qualifying rounds of the Champions League. When the following season starts, Danny finds himself under pressure. with Monday injured and Fletch in trouble. He continues to play well however, despite Harchester not making the group stages of the Champions League.
When Harchester arrive in Dublin for their UEFA Cup tie. Danny meets a young woman named Lisa who is taking her son Charlie to see the match for his birthday. Meeting Danny makes it a birthday he will never forget. Danny and Lisa become quite friendly and agree to meet after the match. Harchester beat Shelbourne and progress to the next level of the UEFA cup. But whilst the team celebrate, Danny misses his meeting with Lisa due to be random drug tested after the match. The samples from Danny's drug test comes back positive. However, it emerges that Danny was not alone as in fact the whole team (minus Fletch) had been taking some extra dietary supplements, courtesy of Andrei Belanov. Danny doesn't know what to do. He can't save himself without dropping his other team mates in it. He turns to Lisa, eventually seeking her out through club records of her son Charlie being a junior dragon. Eventually Danny's second drugs test sample turns out to be in-conclusive, squashing the whole drugs scandal; at least where the FA are concerned anyway. Lisa starts trying to come to terms with the fact that she is in the media eye, as a footballer's girlfriends, a role which she is finding very hard. As the pressure mounts, Lisa decides that its best for herself and her son if she no longer sees Danny, leaving Danny a broken man! When team- mate Peggsy receives his first increased pay from the club, he decides on a big night out with the lads. Him and Danny hook up with some cheap women they meet in Studs and end up spending the night with them at the Grange. However Danny gets talked into taking drugs by the girl he slept with. The next night the lads go out again and end up back at the Grange in the swimming pool, but when the girls get their drugs out again Danny leaves as he does not want to get involved. Danny goes to see Lisa and he tells her that he still loves her and wanted them to get back together. She still has strong feelings for Danny but she just doesn't like all the media attention that comes with being a footballer's girlfriend.
After some impressive form Danny celebrates a call-up to the England Under-21 squad - but he soon has a difficult choice to make. Danny's agent, Jeff Stein, presents him with an England shirt with his name on the back and tells him he wouldn't be more proud if it was his own son who'd got the call. But agent Taylor Doyle tells Danny that he also has the opportunity to play for Ireland and that a call-up to their senior squad for the upcoming friendly against Finland is a possibility. Danny must pick between loyalty to the country of his birth and the fast-track to full international status and the World Cup finals. After seeking the sage advice of his team-mates, girlfriend Lisa and even little Charlie, Danny chooses Ireland and even scores on his debut. He receives another major boost after his Ireland debut when he is handed the Harchester captaincy in place of the suspended Stevie Shaw. Danny, exhausted by his playing and training schedule and the number of commercial activities agent Jeff Stein has set up since his Ireland debut takes Taylor's advice and skips a photo shoot for a sports car company. Jeff Stein suggests that Danny conserve his energies by not only cutting back on the adverts but by picking and choosing his games- suggesting he opt out of the Manchester City FA Cup tie. Danny makes the most of a minor ankle knock to cry off the game but as kick-off approaches he begins to feel increasingly guilty.
Danny's boozy, inveterate gambler father Joe returns and has a shock in store - he tells Danny that he is not his real father and therefore his nan isn't his nan. Thus Danny is not Irish. Danny, stunned, is interviewed by Sky's Chris Kamara minutes later and has a right go at Sven-Goran Eriksson, pretty much burning his bridges with the England set-up. Tearful and not a little drunk after his dad's bombshell news, Danny travels to Stockport to confront his mother Kath, who confesses that his 'father' is indeed not his biological dad and that he was the result of an affair while Joe was away working on the oil rigs. Taylor Doyle - who talked Danny into opting for Ireland over England in the first place - urges him to carry on and even pays Joe to lay it on thick with Danny about how proud he is of him, but unknown to Danny their conversation is being recorded by his dad who hands the tape over to Taylor in exchange for the money. Taylor uses skipper Danny Rawsthorne's newly discovered lack of Irish-ness to try and force the Harchester star into accepting a big money transfer to Atletico Madrid. When Taylor threatens to make a secret tape of Danny and his dad discussing the Irish issue unless he agrees to the move, Danny tries to convince girlfriend Lisa that it'll be a good thing but she refuses to go because of access problems for her son Charlie's father. Danny tries to choose between accepting the dodgy arranged transfer to Atletico Madrid, losing girlfriend Lisa and keeping his lack of Irishness hushed up and staying with Lisa and son Charlie and the prospect of perhaps never playing international football again. Paul Hankin hears of the fact that Danny is not Irish and confronts his dad Joe. However when Danny tells Tash there is a tape with the confession, Tash steels the tape from Taylor's hotel room, which later falls into the position of Joe- who THEN sells the tape to Hankin. Danny is then shown a preview of the story, front page newspaper, of the scandal just before he gets on the team coach, but somewhat eerily retorts that they won't be able to touch him now. Danny was one of the players who died in the 2002 coach crash, just before the UEFA Cup final.
