Marilyn Harwood has worked under Jerry Block for many years. She has spent a lot of that time in the Far East working for a division of Block Enterprises. After purchasing the new stadium, Jerry has managed to get the club into a lot of financial difficulty. He realises that he needs someone who he knows and who he can trust to help him retrieve the situation. Marilyn knows nothing about football but she excels when it comes to running a business. She is very professional and she has always managed to put her career before her social life.
Marilyn arrives in Harchester at the beginning of the 1999/00 season to work as Jerry Blocks Chief Executive. After moving to the newly built Dragons Lair, the club are heavily in debt. Marilyn has been brought in to help sort out the financial situation. Her first day was a baptism of fire. The club needed to postpone a UEFA Cup match against Glasgow Rangers and it was left up to Marilyn to ensure that the match was postponed. After a some negotiation, it was clear that UEFA wouldnt agree to the postponment but instead she got them to allow new signing Wes Kingsley to play in the match. After a busy first day, she spent her first evening in Harchester having dinner with the clubs player/manager, Luis Amor Rodriguez. Being one of the few women employed by the club, she got a lot of attention from the players but she only had eyes for Luis. Unknowingly she ended up in the middle of a love triangle when she befriended Jerry's wife, Lynda. The pair became very close and Lynda even confided in her about Jerry. Keeping the club afloat was proving to be a more difficult job than she had anticipated, after a meningitis scare their was the possibility that several matches might have to be postponed which meant that the club would lose a lot of income that they had budgeted for, in the end the situation was averted. When Lynda started to come out with conspiracy theories about Jerry – Marilyn started to get worried. This was around the time that Jerry hired Gordon Gallagher as Director of Football, Marilyn wasn't happy, she felt undermined and she was suspicious of Gordon from day one. Soon afterwards, stories about the club began to appear in the newspapers. This caused the club much embarrassment and Jerry was determined to get to the bottom of it. After a moment of weakness, Luis ended up sleeping with Marilyn. The next morning Lynda saw her leaving his hotel room and because the story ended up in the papers, Marilyn thought that Lynda was the leak. Afterwards, Luis avoided Marilyn and she demanded to know why, he claimed that it was because he was in love with a married woman. It wasn't until he picked up and injury and she saw Lynda and Luis hugging that she put two and two together. She felt like such an idiot because she had asked for Lynda's advice on the matter several times. Marilyn confronted Lynda over the situation and the pair had a falling out when Marilyn accused Lynda of being the leak. When confidential financial figures were printed in the newspapers, the blame fell on Marilyn, she didn't react kindly to the accusation and after she received some information from Ray Wyatt, she decided to bug Gordon Gallagher's phone. It turned out that Gordon was the leak and Jerry apologised to Marilyn in full. After Councillor Lal had been arrested, Jerry became implicated in a corruption scandal. He knew that he would no longer be allowed to run the football club so he asked Marilyn to take over. He didn't get the response that he wanted as she demanded five percent of the clubs shares before she would even consider the offer. As the club slipped further into debt and as Jerry started to look more and more guilty, Marilyn felt that the club needed a new investor but Jerry was having none of it. Marilyn ended up going behind Jerry's back as she contacted her old boyfriend, Prashant Dattani, who she felt might be interested in buying the club. When it became clear to Jerry that it was Marilyn who had brought Prash to Harchester, he terminated her contract with immediate effect. Having nothing left to stay for, she left Harchester shortly afterwards. Prashant stayed and he was prepared to fight for the club by using any means neccessary.
