Age 26, The Hard Man Midfielder. The uncompromising Liam Mackay was born in Glasgow in 1979. By no means a troublemaker, the young Liam was as principled in the playground as he was to become in his professional life. He would never go looking for a fight but if he thinks a liberty is being taken, he'll let you know. A devoted footballer Liam signed professional terms for Partick Thistle in 1999. He starred for the then Scottish second division side as they won two championships in three years to join the SPL. A man-at-arms, any football coach would want Liam by their side - he is loyal, aggressive, and unquestioningly respected by his peers.
The ambitious Mackay wanted more than the treadmill of Scottish football however and jumped at the chance to play for Dario Gradi's Crewe Alexandra when approached in the summer of 2003. However, the players he found himself surrounded by did not live up to his standards and the relentless nature of the Championship reduced his standing. Liam Mackay was going stale. He needed a new challenge. He knew it - and so did his girlfriend, football agent Chloe Tyler.
Liam spent the summer of 2005 searching for a club but with Chloe investing more time in getting her star client, Eugene Rose, a move, he starts to feel neglected. He's thrilled when she tells him that Harchester want to sign him, unaware that he's actually a makeweight in the deal bringing Eugene to the Dragons. Fairly quiet and reserved, Liam is a man who likes to keep himself to himself. Socially, he's a far cry from the warrior-like presence he has on the football field. He's a player with the ability to drag the team through matches by the scruff of the neck - taking no prisoners and accepting no excuses. In his mind, he is the player against who all others are judged and his standards are very high. He enjoys a volatile and exciting relationship with Chloe, but for how long can he handle sharing his life with a woman whose chosen profession represents everything he despises about his own?
Liam's first months at Harchester are tricky to say the least. Felix Hahn lets slip how his transfer came about and makes no secret of the fact that Felix doesn't rate Liam. Not only does this separate Liam from the rest of the team, but his marriage is torn apart, and just when it looks like things can't get any worse, in comes a blast from Liam's past- Alex Dempsey. Liam ended Alex's career as a player only 2 years previous via a tackle in a pre-season friendly. Now Alex comes to Harchester as head coach. Liam eventually forgives Chloe for her deception over his transfer, manages to keep his head down and slowly becomes a first team regular. However during the Carling Cup Final, Liam launches another tackle, this time on Chelsea player Asa Malione. Liam admits that he intended on being aggressive and as a result brings the Premiership to a complete stand-still and adopts the nickname "The Truth MacKay"! Liam narrowly escapes a life time ban.
At the start of the 2006/07 season Liam finds out that Chloe cheated on him, with Alex Dempsey. Liam kicks Chloe out of the home and his life and walks out on Harchester taking the whole team with him. When Alex can no longer get the team to play for him he steps down as manager. In comes Jimmy Craig, who shows Liam massive amounts of support and respect. Jimmy makes Liam his Captain. Liam soon becomes romantically involved with Jimmy Craig's teenage daughter Gemma. Through his secret relationship with Gemma, Liam looses the respect of his team mates, and they see "The Truth MacKay" as a complete joke. Liam realises that he must give Jimmy and the team his full support if they are to win the Premiership and he must end his relationship with Gemma to avoid any further distractions. Will Liam ever be happy whilst he is putting his football first before his relationships?
